2
Union Strengths Union Strategy Confederate Strengths Confederate Strategy
3
Union Strengths The north had a MASSIVE population advantage
The North had over 23 Million citizens compared to only 9 Million in the South Of that 9 million, 3.5 million were slaves! More citizens=more soldiers and more money
5
Union Strengths The North was industrialized
90% of manufactured goods came out of the North
6
The North manufactured:
Union Strengths The North manufactured: 97 percent of the country's firearms, 96 percent of its railroad locomotives, 94 percent of its cloth, 93 percent of its pig iron, over 90 percent of its boots and shoes
7
Union Strengths More factories meant more supplies for war effort
Also meant greater ability to supply weapons, ammunition, etc..
8
Union Strengths The North had significantly more railroad than the South The Northern states had over 21,000 miles of Railroads Railroads=quicker troop transportation and easily spread of supplies
10
Union Strengths The North had a large and stable banking system
This meant a reliable currency and loans made it easier to fund the war
11
Union Strengths The Union had a significantly larger Navy
Union Naval ships were also simply BETTER Naval power meant the Union could control goods coming in and out of America
12
Union Strategy Aggressive offensive to crush the rebellion
The plan was to take Richmond and destroy the Confederate government
13
Union Strategy The plan was to use naval power to blockade the Southern states by sea Also planed to take the Mississippi River This would cut off Southern supply lines Became known as the Anaconda Plan
14
Confederate Strengths
The South had significantly better military leaders 7 of the 8 military colleges were located in the South Meant that there were MORE quality military leaders in Confederate Army
16
Confederate Strengths
The Southerners were fighting to defend their way of life Essentially the ENTIRE white Southern population supported the war effort Different from North where there was dispute and division much of the war
17
Southerners were also defending their homeland
18
Confederate Strengths
The war took place largely in the South This meant that Confederate leaders were much more familiar with the terrain and territory
20
Confederate Strength The war was largely defensive for this South
It is easier to mostly defend than have to invade, conquer, and occupy Plus much of the Southern geography lent itself to defensive strategy
21
Confederate Strategy The Confederacy wanted to simply defend and outlast the Union forces This was because the primary goal was to achieve independence and recognition from the North
23
Confederate Strategy The South planned to fight and defensive war
Lee would constantly use tactical defense The South hoped it could win a large enough battle to destroy the North’s desire to keep fighting
24
Confederate Strategy Last long enough to get European support
Specifically British and French
