Matthew 22:42 - “What do you think about the Christ?”
Jesus asked this question after being asked 3 questions by the Pharisees & Sadducees (vss. 17, 28, 36) Jesus tries to steer them to think more about God & spiritual realities thru His answers (vss. 21, 29-32, 36-40)

Consider Jesus’ Answers to their Questions:
Verse 21 – “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” Their response? “When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way” (v. 22)

Consider Jesus’ Answers to their Questions:
Verse – “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God; God is not the God of the dead but of the living” Their response? “the multitudes were astonished at His teaching; He had silenced the Sadducees” (vss )

Now, Jesus asks them a Question:
“What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” Their answer? “The Son of David” (a stock answer) He follows up with 2 more questions: “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’?, and, “How is He his Son?” Their Answer? Silence! (v. 46) They couldn’t see what was obvious to the Gentiles! (cp. 8:5-11; 15:21-28)

Matthew Answers Jesus’s Question:
Matthew 1: He is Jesus = “Savior”; Christ = “the Lord’s Anointed”; the Son of David = King (II Sam. 7:13-14), the Son of Abraham = Blesser of All Peoples (Gen. 12:3; 22:18); Immanuel = “God with Us”

The Son of God is Jesus Christ:
King (2:2-6,11; 27:37; 28:18) Universal Savior (1:21; 4:13-16; 8:11; 27:54) Redeemer (9:2-7; 26:28) Supreme Lawgiver (5:18-44; 19:9; 28:18-20) Lord (15:21-28; 8:5-13) Builder of the church (16:13-28; 21:42) Judge of All (25:31-46; 7:21-270
