Career counselors all hold a Master’s degree in Counseling and are skilled at helping you make career decisions.
Career Services uses a group of assessments called Choices to help you narrow down your career path.
These short tests include:
an interest inventory to help you identify what you like to do. This tests asks you questions about how you would like to do certain tasks and as you answer the questions, it builds a profile of your interests. Then, Choices provides you with a list of careers people go into who have similar interest to you.

a values test to help you determine what’s important to you in a workplace setting

Career counselors find out from employers what they consider to be a job-winning resume and help you update your resume
For mock interviews, they get the actual questions employers use in the real deal so that you are better prepared when you go for an interview.
They have career counselors assigned to specific colleges to help with job searching. For the College of Science and Engineering, the career counselor is Jace Medina. You can meet with Jace to refine your resume, practice for a job interview, and search for jobs.
They have a new job database called Handshake that has part-time jobs, internships and full time jobs. They can walk you through using it, if you’d like.

Izzy’s Career Closet is a new service where you can borrow a brand new suit for a job interview. Just go by the Career Center and they will help you select a suit that is right for you.

Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing is a great way to check out a job you think you might want to choose as a career path. In a job shadow, your career counselor will connect you to an employer to spend a half day to a full day following a employer around, watching them perform their job. Job shadows can help you see a different side to the career – you can read about a job, but actually watching someone perform the job in real-life can help you better understand what the job entails.
To help you get the most out of the experience, your career counselor will provide you with a list of questions you can ask the employer so that you can thoroughly understand the job
Internships, practicums, and co-ops are typically experiences that happen later on in your academic career – usually your junior year after you have completed some core major courses. These experiences help you gain on-the-job experience that you can put on your resume and make you marketable when you graduate.
They have an internship coordinator, Rachel Williams, who can assist you with finding a great internship when you’re ready. And they have great paying local internships through their Small Business Internship Program – all these jobs are located in Corpus Christi and pay a minimum of $12.25 per hour. Attending career fairs as a freshmen is a great idea because:
The same employers come each year and you can start building a rapport with them. So, when you get ready to graduate, they are more likely to consider you for their job
If you start coming early, you can find out what kinds of requirements the employer has to be hireable for their job (what is their minimum GPA, required courses that may not be part of your major, work experience they are looking for like internships) If you don’t attend a fair until you are a senior, it will be too late to meet their requirements
