Cell Membrane Notes
2
Objective Describe the function of the cell membrane.
3
Vocabulary Cell membrane Phospholipid Fluid mosaic model
Selective permeability
4
Cell Membrane Forms a boundary between a cell and the outside environment and controls the passage of materials into and out of the cell.
5
Phospholipid A molecule composed of three basic parts:
A charged phosphate group Glycerol Two fatty acid chains (figure on board)
6
The cell membrane is made of two phospholipid layers embedded with other molecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and cholesterol. (figure on board)
7
Fluid Mosaic Model Model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane.
8
Selective Permeability
Semipermeable; Condition or quality of allowing some, but not all, materials to cross a barrier or membrane.
9
A selectively permeable, or semipermeable, membrane allows some, but not all, molecules to cross.
