1 Cell Organelles The little stuff inside the eukaryotic cell!!!

2 Objective: I will be able to identify and describe the functions of the organelles found in eukaryotic cells.

3 Review: What do EUKARYOTIC cells have that prokaryotic cells do NOT have?
Eukaryotic cells have membrane-bound organelles!

4 What are organelles? Organelles are structures that are specialized to perform specific processes in the cell. Each organelle has a unique job!

5 Where are organelles located?
Organelles are floating around in the cytoplasm inside of eukaryotic cells. How many organelles can you see?

6 Now we will look more closely at each organelle... yay!

7 Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane)
Controls which materials go in and out of the cell. Just like a body guard for the cell! Made of a phospholipid bilayer.

8 Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance that holds all the rest of the cell parts (organelles) in place. Analogy: Just like the chairs and tables in our classroom that keep everyone in place

9 Nucleus Where all the DNA (genetic information) is stored
Provides the directions for making proteins Analogy: The brain of a eukaryotic cell.

10 Ribosomes Make proteins by connecting AMINO ACIDS together.
They look like tiny balls floating in the cytoplasm or on the outside of ER Analogy: Like an assembly line that creates proteins

11 Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Thin folded membranes, that make proteins and lipids (fats) in the cell. Rough ER has ribosomes on it; smoother ER does not have ribosomes on it. Analogy: A factory that makes proteins and lipids.

12 Golgi Apparatus Sorts, packages and sends out proteins from the ER
Proteins are sent to different parts of the cell or to another cell Analogy: Like a post office!

13 Mitochondria Supplies energy to the cell by turning food into usable energy. The “power plant” of the cell Analogy: Just like a power plant that supplies energy to a town

14 CFU #1 Which cellular organelle is responsible for packaging the proteins that the cell secretes? A. Cytoskeleton B. Cell membrane C. Lysosome D. Golgi apparatus

15 CFU #2 Which of the following pairs incorrectly matches a cell structure with its function? A. Cell membrane  makes proteins B. Nucleus  information (DNA) storage C. Mitochondria  breaks down sugar D. Cytoplasm  holds organelles

16 CFU #3 Which cellular organelle is controlling which substances enter and exit the cell? A. nucleus B. cell membrane C. ribosomes D. endoplasmic reticulum

17 Animal and Plant Cell Differences
Animal and plant cells are similar, but plant cells have two additional organelles: cell wall chloroplasts

18 Cell Wall Rigid layer around the outside of the plant cell membrane.
Gives protection, support, and shape to plant cells. Analogy: Like the walls of a house!

19 Chloroplast Perform photosynthesis by converting solar energy into sugar (chemical energy) Makes plants green! Analogy: Like solar panels.

20 CFU #4 Which of the following are found ONLY in plant cells?
A. Mitochondria and Endoplasmic Reticulum B. Cell Membranes C. Chloroplasts and Cell Walls D. Cytoplasm and Cell Membranes

21 CFU #5 A. break down sugar into energy B. make proteins
Chloroplasts ________ A. break down sugar into energy B. make proteins C. perform photosynthesis D. control cellular functions

22 Review! Tell a partner the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The other partner needs to explain the differences between plant cells and animal cells.

23 Bingo Review Put one word in each of your 9 boxes.
Cell Mitochondria Organelle Cell wall Nucleus Chloroplast Cell membrane Plant Cytoplasm Animal Endoplasmic reticulum bacteria Golgi apparatus Prokaryotic Ribosomes Eukaryotic

24 Do Now- Week 5 Tuesday: The ________ _______ surrounds cells.
The _________ is like the brain of the cells. The __________ and _________ _________ work to make proteins. cell membrane nucleus Endoplasmic reticulum ribosomes

25 What are the differences between Plant and Animal Cells?
Shape Color Organelles

26 What are the differences between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells?
Size Organelles Nucleus
