-a Players status is either:
Starter = player originally listed in the batting order (including pitcher who is DH’d for)
Starter w/ reentry eligibility = starter who has left the game once
Substitute = all other team players who were not listed as starters
Ineligible Substitute = a substitute, who by rule, has no eligibility.*Exceptions are Courtesy Runners
Unreported Substitute = player who is eligible but entered w/o reporting. *No penalty for Unreported Substitute
Restricted to Dugout = illegal substitute if enters the game.
Ejected = cannot participate further in game. *Remain in Dugout or leave with Adult Personnel
Illegal Substitute = **See 2.36 art 3 (read on your own time)
*Penalty is an out & restricted (if on offense) or if on defense (offense has option to accept play or not)

Question: An illegal sub on defense is involved in a play, the offense has the option to let the play stand or to all the batter to bat again if:
A) The infraction is discovered prior to next pitch to the next batter of either team
B) The infraction is discovered before all the infielder have crossed the foul lines.
C) The infraction is discovered before the next pitch to the next batter of the offensive team.
Answer: A …if an illegal player on defense is involved in a play and the infraction is discovered prior to the first pitch to the next batter of either team…

14. Assuming the pitcher has substitution eligibility:
3-1-2: (page 26) …if a pitcher is replaced while his team is on defense…(do not read)
Assuming the pitcher has substitution eligibility:
*Can a removed pitcher return to pitch in the same inning?
Answer: Yes, if not removed by rule. He may return once per inning.
*If injured, can the pitcher return to pitch the next inning?
Answer: If not removed by pitching rules or substitution rule. He could return to pitch.
*Does a relief pitcher always have to face at least 1 hitter?
Yes unless Injured or 3rd out of inning (pick off, steal , retire hitter, etc.) is recorded while as pitcher of record.
*Can the starting pitcher, be replaced while on offense, before facing a batter?
Yes he can….this would be the Visiting teams starter.

(page 27) ..no coach shall physically assist a runner during playing action. COACH INITIATES CONTACT WITH A RUNNER!
Penalty: The ball is dead at the end of playing action. The involved runner is immediately out and any additional outs made on the play stand. Runners not put out return to the bases occupied at the time of the interference.
*Umpires must know the status of runners at ALL times to be able to place them properly for interference and obstruction*

Remember: *Must vacate any area .
*Interfere in fair territory is always infraction
*Intentional interference is always an infraction.

-Malicious on Defense = EJECTION
Please note: The above are areas where we have to use good judgment & COMMON SENSE!

Umpires must first warn (written) and restrict prior to ejecting for MINOR offenses.
If you have had enough and are ready to EJECT for MINOR / Misdemeanor issues YOU HAVE TO RESTRICT FIRST.
You CANNOT eject a COACH without warning and restricting first EXCEPT for the following:
Threatening or Obscene language
Physical Contact
Failing to Control his players or coaches (per rules)

Defensive Conference- is when a team representative (usually a coach) goes to the mound to visit the pitcher. If a Head Coach or Assistant Coach cross the foul line to speak with ANY defensive player the visit will be either:
*Charged (free) conference and the Team gets 3 per regulation game.
*Not Charged because the Pitcher was changed. Pitchers can be changed unlimited amount of times.
*One additional (total) Charged conference for extra innings
-unused Conferences during regulation DO NOT carry over to extra innings.
-if the pitcher is removed then the conference is NOT CHARGED.
-after 3rd charged (regulation) or 1st (extra inning) then pitcher is removed.
- is concluded when the coach, on his return to dugout, crosses the foul line.
Please note: If a coach has been restricted to the dugout then the conference takes place in the dugout and is over when the player(s) initially return to their positions.

Offensive Conference- is when a Coach wants to speak with either the hitter, runners or both. Time will be called and the coach allowed to converse.

Please note: If a coach has been restricted to the dugout then the conference takes place in the dugout and is over when the player(s) initially return to their positions.

How long does a conference last? A reasonable amount of time as determined by the Plate Umpire.
What if an Offensive and Defensive Conference happen at the same time? Who gets charged?
Whoever called conference first, is charged and the other team may conference as long as they are ready once the original conference is concluded.
How does and which Umpire concludes or terminates the Conference? Walk to the mound (defense) or call to coach (offense).

4.2.2 AIA uses the 10 Run Rule and has adopted a 15 Run Rule.
*Losing coach must agree to 15 run rule.
*Sub Varsity will ask at the Plate Meeting IF there is a time limit (1 hr 45 min). Coaches must agree.
*Sub Varsity DOES NOT have to play out tie games, this is at the discretion of the coaches.
4.33 Called games are “no contests” when the game does go 4 ½ innings (unless home team ahead). No contests are usually rescheduled but this is a function of AIA.

5-1-1-g-4 : Ball is dead immediately when pitched ball thrown and then lodges in umpire’s , catchers or offensive players equipment. 1 Bases T.O.P
5-1-1-h ….the umpire handles a live ball…..ball is dead immediately and all playing action stops. All runners return to bases last occupied at the time the umpire handles the live ball.
5-1-1-j…an infielder intentionally drops a fair fly, fair line drive, fair bunt….
*The ball is dead and batter runner out with at least 1st base occupied…
*An infielder CAN intentionally drop an INFIELD FLY….ball remains live and Infield Fly is enforced.

Delayed dead ball situations:
5-1-2-f: Coach assisting runner. Out immediately but keep playing action live (delayed dead ball). All outs on play stand, all runners who advance (after the infraction) are returned.
5-1-2-G: Delayed dead ball when illegal glove or mitt touches ball. (Offense has option of taking play or 3 base award…more later in rule 7)

5-1-4: When the umpire puts the ball back in play by signaling “Play”, provided the pitcher is engaged with rubber, catcher and batter are in their respective boxes

*Medical emergency exists or further play could jeopardize player’s safety the Umpire will immediately call time and stop play.
5-2-2-b….when the ball becomes dead…a runner may return to a base… READ OUT LOUD
*Between MISSED base & next advance base = Then Ball out of Play = May Return
*On or past next Advance Base = Then ball out of Play = May NOT return to missed base
