100 Cans (1962) by Andy Warhol Art Lesson Grade: 2
Activity: Collective 100 cans Key Words: Pop Art Geometric shapes Repetition Supplies: -White Construction paper – use templates to copy images -Soup can and Fulton banner template black construction (mount) -Pencils Glue Sticks black fine tip markers -Broad and fine tip markers * make sure there is plenty of Red broad tip -Scissors butcher paper Grey Crayons -Artist blurb Art Guide Prep: Use the template to copy enough copies of cans and banner for each student. Pre cut cans and banners -*optional Make copies of the Artist blurb Bring in a Campbell's Soup Can if possible as a prop. Hands On Art: Pass out the cans, banners and medallion to each student. Tell them that we want the cans to look similar, so they all need to color the top part of the can red and the bottom stays white. The lid will be grey crayon. The Fulton banner can be colored in Reds, yellows and oranges. They come up with their own kind of soup. It can be something they like or something really crazy like, Football Soup. Whatever they choose it needs to end with SOUP. The Medallion- They draw a picture of what ever kind of soup they created. So if they did Football Soup, they would draw a picture of a football in the center.

Finish and Display: Examples :
Students cut all the pieces out. *You may want to cut ahead of time Glue medallion in circle Glue the banner on top red half Glue can to black construction paper and cut around it. Take a thick black marker and outline around the medallion. Add name in the lower half of the can on one of the sides. Finish and Display: Collect all the artwork Make sure name is displayed on the front Use butcher paper as your base and then glue down the soup cans to look like Warhol’s 100 cans. Helpful hint- only glue the four corners of the can to the butcher paper. It will make it easier to take down. Display outside classroom on art board. When finished displaying the artwork, cut each one off and then glue on the artist blurb to the back. Examples : Revised: July 2014
