1 Винсент ван Гог

2 Self-Portrait as an Artist
*Vincent van Gogh was born in Holland *He was born in 1853 *His father was a pastor *He loved painting but never had formal training as a young person *He worked for an art company as a young man and loved the art work *He lost his job and studied to be a priest *He left his studies and became a missionary to Belgian miners *His paintings were not appreciated when he was painting *After he and his brother died his sister-in-law made his work famous and sold a great deal of it *He only sold one painting while he was alive , this is the only one in which Van Gogh depicted himself as an artist, with all the necessary equipment: palette, brushes, and a canvas on a wooden easel. Van Gogh probably worked on the painting for some time, and he was apparently quite satisfied with it: in contrast to most of his works in this genre, he has signed it prominently. 4 View of the Sea at Scheveningen
*After Vincent had decided to stop being a missionary he decided to become an artist *He hoped his art would show how beautiful the world is and that people would enjoy it *He went to Paris when he was 33 *Before going to Paris his paintings are fairly dark *This is one of his earlier paintings * It is painted in Oil on Canvas *It is in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam *Van Gogh painted this small view of the sea using thick gobs of colour and a rough brushstroke. * The raging, foaming sea, the dark, thundery sky, and the boat’s flag whipping in the wind all give a good impression of stormy weather. * Van Gogh painted this picture on the spot, at Scheveningen, a beach resort near The Hague. * He had to fight against the elements: the gusting wind and flying sand, which stuck to the wet paint. Most of this was later scraped off, but a few grains can still be found in some of the paint layers. Вид на море в Шевенингене
