1 Natural Resources Agriculture Science 1

2 Objective 5: Explore means of conserving natural resources
a. Identify types of natural resources. b. Describe components and processes in ecosystems. c. Determine sources of environmental pollution and describe methods for reducing pollution. d. Compare methods of waste disposal. e. Determine how to reduce agricultural pollution. f. Determine the importance and methods of natural resource conservation. g. Identify careers in natural resources and determine educational requirements, working conditions, and earning potential for those careers.

3 Types of Natural Resources
Grouped into two types Inexhaustible Exhaustible Key term- exhaustible- able to be depleted or used up completely

4 Inexhaustible Natural Resource
Will be around forever, constantly present, may shift a little but will stay within earths atmosphere barring a major terrestrial event (meteor, nuclear or other event) Examples- Air, water, minerals (soil). May become polluted to the point that they can not sustain life but they will still be here.

5 Exhaustible Natural Resource
Could be depleted or used up. Two types of Exhaustible Natural Resources Renewable Natural Resource Non-renewable Natural Resource

6 Renewable Natural Resource
Can maintain or renew themselves if managed correctly. If it can renew within a reasonable amount of time it is renewable (1000 yrs, (opinions differ)) Examples include- forests, wildlife, fish

7 Non-renewable Natural Resource
Takes millions of years to form Once depleted- they are gone Examples include- iron, lead, copper, aluminum, all metallic elements, petroleum oils, coal, natural gas, gems, precious metals etc.

8 Examples of Natural Resources in Utah and Surrounding States
We have many natural resources that contribute to our economies and way of life in the region. Here are a few examples…….

9 Rio Tinto/Kennecott/Bingham Copper
Left: Rio Tinto Right: Kennecott Below: Bingham Copper

10 Coal Mines in Carbon County and Wyoming

11 Phosphate Mine in Uintah County

12 Gemstones in Central/all of Utah
Left: Topaz Middle: Red Beryl Right: Variscite

13 Silver Mines in Nevada

14 Oil and Natural Gas Fields. Uintah Basin, Colorado Plateau

15 Gold mines in Colorado

16 Gravel pits/ Rock Quarries

17 Cement Plant in Morgan County

18 Gilsonite mine in Uintah Basin

19 Forestry-Lumber, firewood

20 Fish and Wildlife

21 Can you identify others in our area???

22 Think about everything that you have used today!
List 10 item you have used today Identify the natural resource(s) used to make them Label the resource as to which category it belongs in. Give the resource a score on a scale with 1 being low risk and 5 being high risk for that resource being depleted.
