June 21, 2018 Monthly Meeting

2 Near Bit Measurement Technologies
“IF ONLY” Safety Moment

3 Guest Speaker Daan Veeningen Daan has twenty years of international oilfield experience at service companies, equipment manufactures and operations with a career that spans from drilling to completions to production. Daan has taken new technologies to market, published, invented patents and received a World Oil award for improved offshore safety and better well control. At Beyond Limits, Daan promotes artificial intelligence implementations for Oil & Gas for people to make faster, better decisions. How can artificial intelligence near the bit benefit drilling performance? Video

4 Panelists Near Bit Measurement Technologies
Brad Dunbar, Product and Technology Manager BHA Interaction, Halliburton Drill Bits and Services Brad has been with Halliburton since 1998 in various technology and management roles.  Most recently, he has been the Product Manager for Drill Bits from 2012 to 2018 and a few months ago moved in the role of product and technology manager for BHA Interaction.  In this role, he is focused on deploying sensors into Halliburton products to study drilling dynamics and their effect on drilling performance.  Brad holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Oklahoma State University and a MBA from the University of Houston. Joe Gremillion Senior Well Placement Engineer/Petrophysicist Joe has been with Schlumberger for 26 years, with 9 years in the field as an LWD engineer in the USA and Colombia, and 17 years in various roles all doing pretty much the same thing, planning and steering horizontal wells or using RT LWD data for Petrophysics and drilling optimization. Working in North America, Peru-Colombia-Ecuador, Continental Europe, Mexico and back to North America. He is currently working as WP/Petrophysics Domain Champion for NAL focused on application of LWD data for geosteering or frac optimization. Paul Mackinnon Paul joined NOV in 2008 through the GrantPrideco acquisition. At NOV he has held various roles in sales, application engineering and operations with a focus on drilling optimization and automation. Most recently, Paul led the DDS operations organization for WHO. Prior to NOV, Paul worked at Schlumberger in field and other roles in the UK, Norway and Oman and he holds a degree in Geology from Southampton University in the UK. Chaitanya Vempati, Digital Development Manager Vempati is the Digital Development Manager at Drill Bits at Baker Hughes Inc. In his current position he manages the digital group that focuses on in-bit measurement, and drilling optimization. Previously he held various design roles within Baker Hughes Drill Bits. He holds an M.S in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at Austin focusing on design automation, neural networks, artificial intelligence, graph theory and numerical optimization. He has co-authored 4 publications and holds 18 US patents. His interests include drill bit design, dynamics, bit/BHA selection and data mining.

5 Near Bit Measurement Technologies
Question 1: Why do we want to collect data near the bit?

6 Why do we want to collect data near the bit?
Parallel of the auto industry Basic “dum iron” Recorded information Autonomous control Trial and error optimization Recorded data Real Time data Real Time optimization

7 Why do we want to collect data near the bit?
From SPE 35051 Lesso & Kashikar

8 Why do we want to collect data near the bit?
Many applications require DDs to “thread the needle”. Vastly improved well placement/Geosteering potential (D&I and Az Gamma) Bit/Rock and Bit/Drive interactions offer a wealth of learning Bit design Motor Optimization Parameter roadmaps

9 Why do we want to collect data near the bit?
Our goal is to reduce decision latency Bit Data Data Event Bha Data Physics Actions Data Captured Surface Data Value loss Models Value ($) Closest to the drilling Enables understanding of bit-BHA interaction Enables building high fidelity models Data Understood Action taken Time Time Lost

Question 2: What near bit measurement technologies are being developed today?

11 What near bit measurement technologies are being developed today?
Real time 8 sector GR Image Rotary Steerable Systems Automation Closed Loops (Inclination Hold & Hold Inclination and Azimuth) Closed loop steering: Hold inc and Azimuth

12 What near bit measurement technologies are being developed today?
iNBS – Tolteq iSeries Near-Bit Sub Measurement System Run between bit and motor to provide near bit inclination, RPM and azimuthal gamma Short length (31”) limits impact on directional performance (Class leader) EM “short hop” used to transmit data from iNBS to iSeries MWD tool (located above the motor) Available in 4 ¾” (iNBS 400) and 6 ¾” (iNBS 600) versions Enablement business model (Existing iSeries fleet) iNBS near bit sub installed between the bit and motor iNBS inc data vs MWD survey data

13 What near bit measurement technologies are being developed today?
3 Sec HIGHER RESOLUTION 8X MORE MEMORY 6X FASTER DOWNLOAD 70% FASTER TURNAROUND In the pin of the bit / Sub Accelerations, RPM, Temperature WOB / Torque

Question 3: What more do we need to improve operator’s drilling performance metrics?

16 What more do we need to improve operator’s drilling performance metrics?

17 What more do we need to improve operator’s drilling performance metrics?
FURTHER, FASTER, BETTER ENHANCE EFFICIENCY & PRODUCTION ACCURATE & RELIABLE WELL PLACEMENT Less vibration damage to bit and BHA Increased ROP Longer bit runs At-bit Geosteering At-bit Geostoping Less time correcting and more time drilling More footage in zone Increased reliability Less time correcting and more time drilling Enhanced wellbore quality AT BIT SENSING Vibration Direction – inclination, azimuth Gamma Resistivity

18 What more do we need to improve operator’s drilling performance metrics?

19 What more do we need to improve operator’s drilling performance metrics?
Define the metrics properly, is it just about ROP? Delivering a quality hole, in the target window both vertically and azimuthally, and in the correct geological window

20 Upcoming IADD Events

Want to be a luncheon Sponsor? Let us know, we appreciate your participation.

23 Join us on September 17th and 18th
This IADD topical forum will address these issues and determine the criteria for success.  To a directional driller, it can be about painting the line To a geologist, it can be about identifying and staying in the zone To a completion engineer, it can be about the ease of running casing or a completion system To a production engineer, it can be about production rates or minimizing workovers or well interventions Join us on September 17th and 18th

24 Do you have a great idea for IADD? Please Share
Please use the index cards and pencils located on your table today to share your ideas for Speakers, Topics, Improvements with us. We want your opinion.
