Project Ideas Our original idea was to create a natural filtration system with plants and gravel and place them at various locations within the county in streams that lead to the Chesapeake Bay. This project could not be completed as it was originally intended. After having a group meeting, we decided we could complete our environmental project by working at ELMS environmental center.

Elm’s Environmental Center – Native Plant Nursery
The Native Plant The Elms is a non-profit community service program of the Elms Environmental Education Center and St. Mary's County Public Schools. The nursery's mission is to promote the transformation of community landscapes from primarily non-native environments to primarily native, ecologically useful habitats by providing free or low cost native plant material.
4
Transplanting On our first day at ELMS, we transplanted approximately 250 of the following native plant species: False Indigo, New York Ironweed, Joepye Weed, Goldenrod, Winterberry and Monkey Flower. Transplanting involves removing the plant from the smaller pot, weeding, and repotting in a larger pot with fresh soil.
5
Seeding Our second day at ELMS consisted of seeding.
We seeded a total of approximately 800 cells of native plants including New York Ironweed, Joepye Weed, Monkey Flower, Fringe Tree, and the Common Three Square. Seeding involves filling up seed trays with fresh soil, planting the seed at the proper depth for germination, and watering.
6
Weeding/Fertilizing On our third day at ELMS, we weeded small trees in 1 gallon pots After weeding the pots, we poured a small amount of fertilizer into these pots This fertilizer is supposed to break down over the course of several months

Plant Sale Flyer We created a flyer to create community awareness for the Plant Sale that was held on 6/4/11. It was posted at various sites in the community. This information was added to the Elm’s website and an advertisement was placed in the County Times June 2, 2011.
