How Atoms Combine Part 2
2
How and Why Ionic Compounds Occur
In ionic compounds atoms give away electrons to get their 8 electrons. Metals give their electrons to the non-metals Metals end up with a positive charge Non-Metals end up with a negative charge Because the ions are charged they stick together in what is called a crystal lattice structure.

Naming Ionic Compounds
Similar to covalent compounds but NEVER use prefixes (mono-, di-, etc) Name the metal first Change the ending of the non-metal to “ide” Example: NaCl = sodium chloride
5
Examples Provide names for the following compounds: CaCl2
calcium chloride SrO strontium oxide Al2O3 aluminum oxide
6
Writing Formulas Mg2+ Cl1- MgCl2
Using the charges from the periodic table you use the “criss-cross” rules Example: write the formula for the cmpd formed between magnesium bromide Write the formulas for the two elements Write the charges as superscripts “Criss-cross’’ them to make subscripts Mg2+ Cl1- MgCl2
