5. Bowers v. Hardwick (1986) Georgia had anti-sodomy laws
Man arrested for being observed by a police officer having consensual gay sex in his home
Court upheld law said “no connection between family, marriage, or procreation on the one hand and homosexual activity on the other hand has been demonstrated”

6. Romer v. Evans (1996)
Colorado residents passed a constitutional amendment to the states constitution that prevents sexual orientation from being protected in anti-discrimination laws
Court found amendment violated equal protection clause

7. Boy Scouts of America v. Dale (2000)
Man kicked out of position as scoutmaster when they found out he was gay
Court ruled it was the boy scouts right to dismiss him

8. Lawrence v. Texas (2003) Two men arrested for having sex
anti-sodomy laws in Texas
Court ruled anti-sodomy laws unconstitutional overturned Bower v. Hardwick
“Their right to liberty under due process clause gives them the full right to engage in their conduct without intervention of the government”

9. United States v. Windsor (2013)
Two women were arried, when one died the widow had to pay $360,000 estate tax because marriage wasn’t legal in the US
Defense of Marriage Act declared unconstitutional and deprived married same-sex couples from their 5th amendment rights to equal protection

10. Hollingworth v. Perry (2013)
California voters passed prop 8 banning same-sex marriage
Court overturned proposition allowing California same sex couple to marry
Only Applied to Western states covered by district court

11. Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)
Supreme Court ruled fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by the due process clause and equal protection clause of 14th Amendment
