Definition Condition exhibiting one or more of these characteristics that affect child’s performance Inability to learn not explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors Inability to learn to build interpersonal relationships with peers or teachers Inappropriate types of behavior Pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression

Types Anxiety disorder- Excessive fear, worry, or uneasiness
Severe depression- Feel sad, worthless, or cry Bipolar disorder- Exaggerated mood swings Conduct disorder- Do not think about others Schizophrenia- Hallucinations and withdraw from others

Characteristics Disruptive to classroom Impulsive
Inattentive, distractible Disregards all rules Poor concentration Speaks out, repeatedly Aggressiveness, bullies Low self esteem

Prevention Strengthen families- Target problems and communicate
Strengthen individuals- Build skills and improve cognitive behaviors Promote mental health- Modify school environment to promote social behavior
