Great Britain (GB) ruling North America after French/Indian War Enforcing Trade Laws: GB needed $ to pay troops to control North America & par war debt increase taxes smuggling Writs of assistance – docs to allow officers to search almost anywhere for smuggled goods Sugar Act 1764 Lowered tax on sugar Hoped to decrease smuggling & allowed officers to seize goods from accused smugglers w/o going to court Colonists don’t like it b/c sugar act ignored right to trial by jury & allowed troops in homes w/o permission

Stamp Act 1765 (taxed all printed materials) Opposition to Stamp Act: Patrick Henry in Virginia – resolution stating Virginia House of Burgesses only had the power to enforce these types of taxes Samuel Adams in Massachusetts – started Sons of Liberty (protesters) Boycotting used Parliament repealed Stamp act in 1766 Townshend Act 1767 (tax on glass/tea/paper paid before customers bought) Boycotting/protesters started again Daughters of Liberty formed
