Rice Paddies and Math tests

Summary The workers in the rice patty fields have to work hours a year and have a saying that “No one who can rise before dawn three hundred sixty days a year fails to make his family rich. Gladwell relates this dedication to hard work with success in math. A student named Renee tries to create a vertical line on a mathematics program and she fails to do so for over 20 minutes. This commitment to trial and error is what makes the difference between being good or bad at math.

Summary In chapter 8 “Rice Paddies and Math Test’s, it is displaying how Asian people have an advantage over English speaking people when it comes to math. The reason for this is because Asian children are taught to count much faster than American children. The regularity of their number system also means that Asian children can perform basic functions far more easily than American children. Basically, Asians have the lead in math over Americans.

Connection The Japanese and Chinese are generally more successful in math classes. This is not because they are smarter than us, it is because they work harder and dedicate more of their time to studying and doing well. They are studying in universities many hours later than we are and this time defines their success. In chapter 2 the 10,000 hour rule is for anyone who practiced 10,000 hours in anything were able to achieve greatness. Students who study for 10,000 hours are able to excel in the subject of their studies

connection This chapter connects to everyday life in most schools. The reason for that is because everyone knows at least five Asian kids in their school or grade that they know is eventually going to be an extremely successful person. There really isn’t a time when you come across an Asian kid in your school that doesn’t really do good in school. To me Asian kids in school are pretty much set for life.

Success If someone in River Dell were to study for 10,000 hours they would become great in their subject of study. Students in River Dell have scored perfect scores on the SATs they undoubtedly committed 10,000 hours to study the SATs, thus making them successful. If an average person were to try to study for 10,000 hours in a subject they are going to be dominant in that subject.

Success This type of success is valid because I think anyone is capable of achieving the intelligence that Asian people have in math. Like what Malcom Gladwell said, Asian children have it easier than American children. That doesn’t mean that American students are not capable of what Asian students can do in their math class. I know several people that are American and are at the level Asian students are in school.
