1 Planning Your Next Regional Workshop
John McDaris and Carol Ormand, SERC, Carleton College

2 Checkpoint: this is the 2nd-to-last regional workshop you will run with project support
Thinking cumulatively, over the course of the project, your region’s workshops need to address all three project strands: Supporting the academic success of all students Broadening participation in the geosciences / STEM Facilitating students’ professional pathways into the geosciences, including both career and transfer pathways

3 Workshop topics & project strands *
2016 Future Academic success Broadening participation Careers/ Transfer NoCal x X SoCal Florida Illinois New York N. Carolina Oregon Texas Virginia Wisconsin * If you think we have mis-characterized your previous workshops, please let us know.

4 Strong program design strategies & approaches
Adopting / adapting sessions from our workshops with you (all of you have done this at least once) Building on your own expertise. Ex: Florida focus on research with 2YC students Piggybacking on an existing regional meeting. Ex: Virginia, Wisconsin Inviting guest speakers and/or using videos of expert presentations. Ex: IL used a video of Saundra McGuire giving a presentation on metacognition, had Don Gillian-Daniel as a guest speaker. TX has utilized local experts as well. Building on local / regional field examples. Ex: Oregon case studies Inviting administrators and/or other stakeholders (transfer counselors, tutoring center, geoscience professionals, campus student disabilities office) to the workshop. Ex: New York, SoCal, VA, others. Piggybacking on the NAGT traveling workshop program. Ex: SoCal Using professional development day (Ex: NC, WI)

5 Peer and SERC support over time
2016: Each team participated in 2 regional workshop planning sessions: one in which you talked about your plans and got feedback, another in which you gave feedback to other teams John and Carol did some (generally minor) coaching to help you with website development : Each team participated in 1 regional workshop planning session, with one or two other teams giving you feedback (along with John and Carol) Negligible help with websites - actually we’ve had to remind you that you can’t edit the registration or evaluation forms : We made a workshop website checklist for you to complete as you plan your workshop: Each team will participate in 1 regional workshop planning session, with one or two other teams giving you feedback : In the regional workshop planning sessions, we will pair you with Cohort 2 teams, so that they can benefit from your experience as you review each other’s plans

6 Remember that you have web pages to guide you in planning your workshop:
General guidelines and reminders: Timeline: workspace/timeline.html Workshop website checklist: workspace/website_checklist.html Presentations and planning notes from our workshops with you: workspace/presentations.html (greatly expanded!)

7 Work time Remember backwards design. Use each other as resources.
Start by articulating your goals for the workshop. Use each other as resources. Do you want to have a session on broadening participation or geoscience careers or transfer? Look at programs from the Change Agent teams who have done that. Ask them any questions you have about session design, what went well, what they would do differently if they did it again…. Work directly on your workshop website. Links are on the program page for this workshop. At the end of this session, aim to have Workshop goals A DRAFT of session topics / times A plan for moving forward with your teammates in planning your workshop, including who will do what, when
