Homeostasis
Most protists live in a moist environment – therefore they must maintain their water balance or they will not survive.
Protists have an organelle called a contractile vacuole that pumps out excess water from the cell.

Many protists reproduce asexually by a parent cell dividing to form two cells
SEXUALLY
Those protists that reproduce sexually, do so via conjugation – exchange of nuclear material between two individuals

Some live in the gut of termites (helps termite digest wood)
Trypanosoma – parasite of humans in Africa that cause sleeping sickness
Notice the whip-like tails – or flagella – that the flagellates use to move through the water.

move using hair-like cilia that beat to help the organisms move through water
Includes Paramecium
Found in fresh and salt water – contain star shaped contractile vacuoles
Usually free-living
