1 2-5-18 Convection Currents Lab

2 Do Now: Answer the following questions in your Science Notebook
What are the 3 forces that cause tectonic plates to move? Basal drag, ridge push, slab pull What causes convection to occur? Differences in temperature or density

3 Plate Tectonics Quiz Thursday, 2/8/18
What is the theory of plate tectonics? What are the three types of plate boundaries? Why do tectonic plates move?

4 Lab: How do changes in density cause motion?
Materials: 100 ml carbonated water/soda Beaker 5 raisins Read and complete a lab safety form. Have Mr. Santos initial it. Follow lab procedure. Record observations Clean up: take out raisins and throw in trash; dump soda down sink, rinse out beaker & set to dry on paper towel. Answer “Analyze and Conclude” questions. This will be homework if not completed in class.

5 Lab: How do changes in density cause motion?
Describe each raisin’s motion. After bubbles attach to the raisins, they rise to the surface. When the raisins reach the surface, bubbles pop and the raisins fall back to the bottom of the container. How does the behavior of the raisin model compare to the motion in Earth’s mantle? The behavior of the raisins is similar to the behavior of material in Earth’s mantle. In the mantle, heat changes the buoyancy (the ability to float). In this experiment, the bubbles of carbonated liquid change the buoyancy.
