Figure 1 Macrophages that Encounter Bacteria or Other Foreign Objects Have a Choice: Take Them In or Keep Them Out Plan A: a macrophage ingests a bacterium, kills it, and digests it. Plan B: the macrophage fails to kill the bacterium, which replicates, or fails to digest other types of foreign objects, which persist. Other macrophages arrive and help to form a granuloma. They express E-cadherin (indicated by the brown band) and establish tight junctions (symbolized by the paired bars) with each other, forming a pseudoepithelium that positions the bacteria or foreign objects as if they lay outside the skin of the host.
