Edenton: A Distinctive Destination
The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Edenton a “Distinctive Destination” “Edenton was home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence - but it was women who put the town on the map. In 1774, Penelope Barker, whose residence is open today to visitors, organized the Edenton Tea Party, the earliest known example of political action by women in the American colonies. Almost a century later, Edenton native Harriet Jacobs wrote Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, which has been reprinted in more than 20 languages. “A stroll through the town's historic district provides ample opportunity to soak up three centuries of architecture, including a 1767 Courthouse and the Cupola House, both among the nation's finest Georgian buildings. Children love Edenton's National Fish Hatchery …, and kids of all ages can take part in the national pastime by rooting for the home team at historic Hicks Field, which boasts the oldest remaining wooden grandstand in the state.” region/edenton-nc-2003.html In March 1775, a political cartoon published in London satirized the Edenton women who participated in the Edenton Tea Party March 2012 Focus on Edenton

Edenton: America’s Prettiest Towns
Forbes Magazine named Edenton one of “America’s Prettiest Towns“ in April 2011 “Just off the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina's Outer Banks, Edenton sets itself apart from the other towns in the area with its historic architecture, an enviable location on Edenton Bay, and enough charm to earn its nickname, ‘The South's Prettiest Small Town.’ A few miles inland from the coast, Edenton is worlds away from the modern resort architecture of the Outer Banks destinations. ‘As one of the oldest towns in North Carolina, its well-preserved colonial- and plantation-era homes have earned it a deserved slot on the National Register of Historic Places.” towns_slide_2.html%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E Photograph of the Barker House, Edenton, which was selected by Forbes to introduce its story identifying ‘America’s Prettiest Towns’ March 2012 Focus on Edenton
