3 pillars of the project Identification Assessment NPS
“Quantification” Title: Monitoring extent and patterns of use of NPS (Monitoring the most widely-used NPS in European cities) Activities: The NPS identified and selected in WS1 and WS2 will be monitored in wastewater and urine Aim: Assess NPS extent and pattern of use in the population by combining wastewater analysis and urine analysis in cities in Europe 14/11/2018

WS 3 : Monitoring extent and pattern of use of NPS
Activity 1: synthesis of standard and metabolites (UJI, FFULISBOA) - Purchase of reference standard Reference standards already available (in IRFMN, …others ?) Reference standards commercially available - Synthesis of standard, metabolites and deuterated analogues (identified and refined in WS1 and WS2) - Description of analytical parameters (retention time, isotopic distribution, fragment ions, fragmentation) Aim: to get reference standards and analytical parameters to set up analytical methods (activity 2) 14/11/2018

WS3 Activity 2: analytical methods in wastewater (IRFMN, UJI, FFULISBOA, INMLCF, EMCES, NIVA) Development, validation and standardization of analytical methods for NPS markers in wastewater Inter-laboratory standardization ? 14/11/2018
7
WS3 Activity 3. analysis of NPS markers in wastewater (IRFMN, UJI, NIVA…….) Analysis for markers in wastewater from EU cities (20 EU cities are foreseen or 2017 European SCORE study ? Ask for permission to the partners ?) and music festivals (urine and wastewater in 2017 ? ) Repeated sampling in some cities (Milan, Lisbon…..) Enantiomeric profiling studies Activity 4: estimating NPS use in Europe (IRFMN, UJI, FFULISBOA, INMLCF, EMCES, NIVA) Estimation of NPS use, trends and pattern of consumption (from analysis of markers in wastewater and in urine) 14/11/2018

Expected results Identification, assessment and quantification of some of the NPS most widely used in Europe Outputs: A collection of about 100 substances (Standards, metabolites...) 2 Research papers 2 book chapters Meeting/Postgraduate Course (2 events) 14/11/2018
