Presentation on theme: "I’d like to start by developing a foundation for PA"— Presentation transcript:

1 What are the Three P’s in Literacy & Language Development and Why are They Important?
I’d like to start by developing a foundation for PA. It’s important that we have a common language for our work together…I’m sure within this room there are varying levels of knowledge about PA so as we build our foundation make sure you acclimate it to your needs. You may need to determine how this info and/or strategies fit with your knowledge or the level of your students. Having said that… March 2018

2 GOALS Understand the difference between:
phonological awareness phonemic awareness phonics Learn about the importance of the 3 P’s in the success of reading Share some phonological awareness strategies Birth-2nd Grade Let’s look at our goals for today… GOALS

3 Key Processes for Reading
Let’s zoom out for a minute to see where this info/PA fits into the reading process…so, we will be focusing on phonological processing Show no eyes chart Key Processes for Reading

4 Definition of Phonological Awareness
Explicit knowledge about the sound structure of the language at the word and syllable level, with the ability to manipulate those sounds independent of meaning So keeping in mind our chart…the def of PA is Definition of Phonological Awareness

5 Video-approx 4mins What Does It Look Like?

6 Definition of Phonemic Awareness
Awareness of the smallest sound units of spoken language-phonemes and the ability to recognize and manipulate those sounds within a word We’re still using ears and mouth for PA but it is focussed on the smallest… Definition of Phonemic Awareness

7 Video- approx 4mins What Does It Look Like?

8 Understanding that written spelling patterns systematically represent phonemes
Show chart…here’s where we transition from just ears and mouth to eyes. Although PA does not involve print, it has been researched that connecting print to PA strategies is very beneficial Definition of phonics

10 Why is Phonological Awareness Important?
What usually begins as a core phonological and word recognition deficit — often associated with other language weaknesses —  becomes a diffuse, debilitating problem with language, both spoken and written. (Louisa Moats, “When Older Students Can’t Read” 2001) This is why we’re here today…many SPED referrals come from phonological deficit. We need to try to fill that gap… Why is Phonological Awareness Important?

11 Phonemic Awareness Research
Phonemic awareness is necessary for learning and using the alphabetic code Phonemic awareness predicts later outcomes in reading and spelling The majority of poor readers have relative difficulty with phoneme awareness and other phonological skills Instruction in phonemic awareness is beneficial for novice readers and spellers Phonological awareness interacts with and facilitates the development of vocabulary and word consciousness Let’s look at some research together…jigsaw article using keypoint/big idea strategy Phonemic Awareness Research

12 Phonological Awareness Framework
We’re going to use this chart to frame our thinking about PA. To me, I look at PA as the big umbrella. Then, underneath are the more specific skills. So, when beginning to work on PA with children you’ll want to focus on the bigger, less complex skills. Having shared that, I would also like to show you another literacy framework that is more detailed and includes birth to age 9 (2-3rd grade) So, now that we have a foundation of PA and its importance, I would like to share some strategies to engage children in PA… Phonological Awareness Framework

15 Any Questions?? Wrap Up: *Turn & Talk -Share something you learned
-Share a strategy you would like to try We fit a lot in this session…are there any questions?? Before you go could you turn & talk with a colleague next to you and share something you learned and what strategy you may try
