Lesson 16 Explain 2 Day 2 CHAIN LINK Number 1- SUN The sun is the first step in a food chain. The sun provides energy to all living things. Why did we place the sun in position one? (The sun begins the food chain because it provides the needed energy for the plant to make food.) SCIE_2_A_Les16Day2FoodChains_MAT CFISD 2014

Lesson 16 Explain 3 Day 2 CHAIN LINK Number 2 - PLANTS Plants are the second step in a food chain. Plants use the sun to make their own food. Why are plants in position two? (Plants use the sun’s energy to make their own food.) SCIE_2_A_Les16Day2FoodChains_MAT CFISD 2014

Lesson 16 Explain 5 Day 2 ACTION – Food Chains You will be given a card. You will walk silently through the room looking for a card that links to your food chain. When you have a completed 1, 2, 3 chain (or more) link arms and sit down on the carpet. Each group will share their food chain with the class by explaining why they are 1, 2, or 3. Students will act out the food chains. Have copies of different food chains placed on cards. Have sentence strips numbered 1 for the sun, 2 for the plant, and 3 for the animals in the food chain. Students will find the parts of their food chain, link hands, then each student will share why they are number 1, 2 or 3. For the food chain cards, it is helpful to have them backed with different colors for each food chain so that students know that others with the same color are in their group. Note that food chains with more than 3 cards, all the animals would be number 3. Allow the students to figure out the order of the animals within number 3. Lesson 16 Elaborate 1 Day 2 Write a Thank-You Note Pretend you are an animal that has been helped by a plant or an animal. Create a food chain. You will include this information in your thank-you note. Include in your thank-you note: the name of your animal tell about the sun tell about the plant that the animal eats for energy OR tell about other animals that the animal may eat for energy. Write a short note thanking the plant or animal for its help. SCIE_2_A_Les16Day2FoodChains_MAT CFISD 2014

Lesson 16 Elaborate 2 Day 2 Food Chain Sun Grass Giraffe My animal is a giraffe. Dear Grass, I wanted to thank you for what you do for me. You take the energy from the sun and make food with it so that I can eat you and get the energy I need. It is a very special act that you do for me. I wish that I could make food like you then I would not need to hunt so much. Thanks, Giraffe SCIE_2_A_Les16Day2FoodChains_MAT CFISD 2014
