1 Types of Maps and Parts of Maps

2 Background check What is a map, and when was the last time you used one?

3 Goal: I will understand different parts and types of maps.

4 Maps are pictures of the Earth's surface.
I) What Is a Map? Maps are pictures of the Earth's surface. They can be general reference and show landforms, political boundaries, water, the locations of cities They can also show specific topics such as the average rainfall distribution for an area or the distribution of a certain disease throughout a county.

5 II) The Different Types of Maps
Physical Map Political Map Thematic Map Economic/Resource Map

6 III) Physical map shows the physical landscape features of a place.
show things like mountains, rivers and lakes and water in blue.  Mountains and elevation changes are usually shown with different colors and shades to show relief. Normally on physical maps green shows lower elevations while browns show high elevations.  Low elevation coastal regions are shown in dark green, while the higher elevations transition from orange to dark brown. Example: (txpg. 4-5)

7 focuses solely on the state and national boundaries of a place.
IV) Political Map focuses solely on the state and national boundaries of a place. include the locations of cities - both large and small, depending on the detail of the map. Example: (txpg. 6-7)

8 V) Thematic Map a map that focuses on a particular theme or special topic and  do not just show natural features like rivers, cities, political subdivisions, elevation and highways. Could be used to showing the population density Example: (txpg. 8-9)

9 VI) Economic/Resource Map
shows the specific type of economic activity or natural resources present in an area through the use of different symbols or colors depending on what is being shown on the map. Example (txpg 10-11)

10 VII) Parts of a map Title- Tells the subject of the map. Compass Rose- shows direction Legend- key that states what colors and symbols mean Scale- Shows the relationship from the map to Earth.

12 MAP PROJECT (Due Sep. 21st)
You are to create a map from my classroom to the Science hall. Include the 4 parts of a map such as Title, compass rose, scale, and legend. It must by in a regular sized white paper.
