Part I College Organization

College Organization The Citadel is a military college
A military system is used as the framework for training cadets to become “Principled Leaders.” The Citadel is unique in that both a military and college structure are combined to enhance the overall student experience. The organization of The Citadel is similar in many ways to the organization of units found in the United States Army.

President of the College
Like all other colleges and universities, all of The Citadel’s Operations are led an overseen by a college president. At The Citadel, The President is a General Officer from one of the branches of the United States Armed Forces:

President of the College
Currently, The Citadel has an interim President: LtGen. John Sams, Jr. (USAF, Ret.) -LtGen. Sams graduated from The Citadel in 1967. -Served on The Citadel’s Board of Visitors. -Served 32 years in the United States Air Force. -Flew combat missions in Vietnam.

President of the College
The Citadel’s new president is General Glenn Walters (USMC). -Gen. Walters graduated from The Citadel in 1979. -Has recently served as the 34th Assistant Commandant of the United States Marine Corps. -Has served 39 Years in the USMC. -Is a Marine Corps Aviator. -Will be arriving to The Citadel in October.

Provost/Dean Similar to other colleges, The Citadel has a Provost (Dean). The Provost specifically oversees and is responsible for all of The Citadel’s Academic Affairs.

Provost/Dean Currently, The Citadel has an interim Provost: Brigadier General Mark Bebensee. Has served at The Citadel for 34 years. Holds a PhD. From Duke University Has taught both undergraduate and graduate students in the Business Department Has served as the Assistant to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies as well as Department Head, and then, Associate Dean of the School of Business Administration.

Commandant of Cadets Because The Citadel is a Military College, it has a Commandant of Cadets. The Commandant of Cadets is responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets

Commandant of Cadets -Served as a Navy SEAL Officer.
The Citadel’s Commandant of Cadets is Captain Geno Paluso, (USN, Ret.). -Captain Paluso Graduated from The Citadel in 1989. -Served as a Navy SEAL Officer. -Commanded Naval Special Warfare Group 3.

To assist the Commandant in overseeing the daily functioning of the Corps of Cadets; there are Assistant Commandants and a SgtMaj.

Corps Organization The South Carolina Corps of Cadets is organized similar to an Army Regiment.

Corps Organization Regimental Commander 1st Class Cadet Senior
Commander of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets; approximately 2000 cadets organized into five battalions. Responsible to the Commandant of Cadets for the health, morale, welfare, academic proficiency, military training, intramural athletics, administrative efficiency, safety, and discipline of the Regiment. Regimental CSM 2nd Class Cadet Junior Reports directly to the Regimental Commander. Responsible for monitoring all activities, policies and performance and appearance of all cadets. Enforces appearance and performance standards of individual cadets. Focuses on individual training of the Fourth Class and cadet NCOs.

Corps Organization Each of the Barracks on Campus is referred to as a Battalion

Corps Organization Each Battalion is commanded by a Cadet Battalion Commander (1st Class Cadet / Senior) with the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel. Commands a battalion of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets consisting of approximately 500 cadets. Responsible for the health, morale, welfare, academic proficiency, military training, intramural athletics, administrative efficiency, safety, and discipline of the company personnel. Responsible for implementing and strict adherence to published college policies and regulations to include but not limited to The Blue Book, and the White Book. COLLAR RANK: SLEEVE RANK:

Company Organization: Company Commander
Commands a rifle company, the Regimental Band, or Palmetto Battery consisting of approximately 100 cadets. Responsible for the health, morale, welfare, academic proficiency, military training, intramural athletics, administrative efficiency, safety, and discipline of the company personnel. Responsible for implementing and strict adherence to published college policies and regulations to include but not limited to The Blue Book and the White Book.
