5 Authentic Friendship Can we still have it in a superficial world?
In spite of these trials and being a refugee in his own land, David remained true and faithful to God. He took refuge in God. Who was David? David was born in Bethlehem, the youngest son of Jesse of the tribe of Judah. David means “beloved” in Hebrew. Who was David’s great grandmother? Ruth a refugee from Moab who chose to reside in Israel. Rth_4:17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi." They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. God rejected Saul. God chose David because he had a heart after God’s. 1Sa 13:14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you." Act 13:20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. Act 13:21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. Act 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.' Act 13:23 Of this man's offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. What does it mean to have a heart after God’s heart? I believe it is a heart of worship, a heart of devotion and a heart that takes refuge in God. Theme is on refuge Keith leong & Charlotte Ng Audrey, Sandra & Anne Marie Life of David, a life full of ups and downs. David took refuge in God when he was a Shepherd, soldier, sovereign, sinner and saviour We will be exploring the different milestones and seasons of David.

7 1 Samuel 18:1-4 1Sa 18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 1Sa 18:2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house.

8 1 Samuel 18:1-4 1Sa 18:3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 1Sa 18:4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.

“Friendship produces an entire sameness; it is one soul in two bodies: a friend is another self.” Adam Clarke, Theologian

13 1 Samuel 23:15-18 1Sa 23:15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 1Sa 23:16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God.

14 1 Samuel 23:15-18 1Sa 23:17 And he said to him, "Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Saul my father also knows this." 1Sa 23:18 And the two of them made a covenant before the LORD. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.

3 Authentic friendship is more than just listening (1 Sam 19:1-7)

16 1 Samuel 19:1-7 (1Sa 19:1) And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David. (1Sa 19:2) And Jonathan told David, "Saul my father seeks to kill you. Therefore be on your guard in the morning. Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.

17 1 Samuel 19:1-7 (1Sa 19:3) And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to my father about you. And if I learn anything I will tell you." (1Sa 19:4) And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, "Let not the king sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his deeds have brought good to you.

18 1 Samuel 19:1-7 (1Sa 19:5) For he took his life in his hand and he struck down the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?" (1Sa 19:6) And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. Saul swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be put to death."

19 1 Samuel 19:1-7 (1Sa 19:7) And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan reported to him all these things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.

20 “Who shall bring any charge against God's elect
“Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” Romans 8:33-34

21 “Better is open rebuke than hidden love
“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.” Proverbs 27:5-6

22 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17
