5 Purpose of the Calvert Area Emergency Warning System: To warn you when there is a threat of: –Severe weather –Hazardous material releases

7 Community Outreach How do we keep our community informed? Good neighbor night Wally visits to area schools

8 Community Outreach Who is Wally Wise Guy? Wally Wise Guy is a 64 turtle that knows it's wise to go inside his shell whenever there's danger. Wally is targeted to reach children from kindergarten to 4th grade. We teach through 3 rd grade. Wally was developed by the Community Education Task Force, a consortium of Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPC) along the Houston Channel, TX and was purchased for this program by our local facilities

9 How Does Wally Teach Kids How to Shelter-In-Place? Wally visits local schools and teaches kids what it means to shelter-in-place. He also visits the community folks that come to Good Neighbor Night. Wally visits in the fall to teach concepts and then again in the spring to review those concepts. The kids LOVE Wally! Schools visited are: Calvert City Elementary, Sharpe Elementary, Reidland Elementary, South Livingston Elementary, and North Livingston Elementary

11 Marshall County Emergency Warning System Includes: 911 Central Dispatch Outdoor Warning Sirens National Weather Service (NWS) EAS Radio/TV Broadcasts

12 What to Do When You Hear the Sirens – Shelter-In-Place Go inside Do NOT use the telephone Turn on your TV/radio

13 How Does It Work? Emergency occurs Sirens are activated TV/radio provide details

14 Emergency Warning System Tested: 1:00 p.m. First Friday of each month Testing: approximately 30 seconds Activation: approximately three minutes

15 Locations of Outdoor Warning System-Sirens Located throughout Marshall County and Livingston County Located at all Fire Stations in both counties If you are interested in the exact locations – contact your local EM office

16 What to Do If Told to Shelter-in-Place During a Hazardous Materials Release: Close all doors and windows Shut off all outside air sources Stay tuned to radio Keep pets indoors Seal doors and windows

17 If You Are in Your Car and You Are Notified of a Hazardous Materials Release: Close all windows Shut off all vents Set your AC/heater on re-circulate Keep your radio on for further information

18 Do NOT Use the Telephone! Telephone lines need to be open for emergency use.

19 If Notified to Evacuate Remain calm Gather emergency supplies Turn off appliances Secure your home Stay tuned to the radio Drive carefully

20 Think About Having An Emergency Kit It should contain emergency supplies and Help you stay prepared

21 Your Emergency Kit Should Contain.. And Other Important Items For Your Safety Duct tape to help seal windows Flashlight with extra batteries Battery operated radio Towels First aid kit Non-perishable food Drinking water – sealed Prescription medicines Food/water for pets and you!
