At 9 years old he was sent to France for military training. he moved from victorious general to political leader. “I grew up on the field of battle, and a man such as I cares little for the life of a million men”

Emperor Napoleon Was a military man and then became a political leader. One of the greatest commanders in history. Constructed the Napoleonic Code, one of the greatest sets of laws. “I grew up on the field of battle and a man such as I cares little for the life of 1 million men.”

The Napoleonic Code Included Enlightenment principles like: equality of citizens, religious toleration, & advancements based on merit. Because of this code women lost most of their rights and male heads of household had complete control.

The Battle of Nations In 1813 Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Nations. The following year as his enemies closed in Napoleon abdicated, or stepped down from power.

The Congress of Vienna The Congress of Vienna (September 1814) tried to restore stability and order in Europe after 25 years of war. Peacemakers redrew the map of Europe and ringed France with strong countries. In the north, they added Belgium and Luxembourg to Holland to create the kingdom of the Netherlands.

Stability- When Napoleon ruled France, other countries had been under almost constant warfare defending their territories Suppress revolutions like the French Revolution– If you were the King of Prussia, would you want your people to revolt? Settlement of Territories

Results of Congress of Vienna
Gave balanced settlements that allowed about 40 years of peace in Europe Was still generous to the defeated France– so it did not create a want for revenge Restored all monarchies to original 1793 thrones– or the descendants of original monarchs Ignored demands for greater democracy– which eventually leads to later conflicts
