Chapter 20: Plant Anatomy and Growth
20.1 Plant Organs Two parts- root and shoot Leaves-organs of photosynthesis Stems-supports leaves and transports materials Roots- anchors plant and absorbs water and nutrients from the soil Monocot vs. Eduicot See chart, page 344 Monocots- one cotyledon (embryonic leaves) Eudicots- two cotyledons

20.2 Plant Tissues and Cells
Plants grow their entire lives because of meristem (embryonic tissue) Three types of tissue Epidermal (covering) Ground (interior) Vascular (transport) Xylem- water and minerals Phloem-sugars
9
20.3 Organization of Leaves
Leaf is called a blade, with a stalk called a petiole Interior of leaf has two layers of mesophyll (carries on photosynthesis) Palisade (long cells) Spongy (irregular cells surrounded by air spaces) Ends of veins are in mesophyll
11
20.4 Organization of Stems Wood- xylem that builds up year after year
One year’s growth is called the annual ring, can be used to tell the age of trees

Chapter 21: Plant Responses and Reproduction 21
Chapter 21: Plant Responses and Reproduction 21.3 Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants Have an alternation of generations (sporophyte and gametophyte)
16
Flower: reproductive structure found only in angiosperms
Parts Sepals- protect bud of flower during development Petals- attract pollinators Stamens- male portion where pollen is made (contains the anther on top of the filament) Carpel- female portion where ovary sits. Style (stalk) connect ovary with the stigma where pollen is deposited)
