1 Adding/ Subtracting Integers Worksheet due Wednesday!!
Bellwork: Monday Agenda: Adding/ Subtracting Integers Worksheet due Wednesday!!

2 Subtracting Integers Stations
7.NS.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers 7.NS.1a Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

3 Reminder of Rules: Addition Subtraction - change to addition
-Keep the 1st number the same -Change subtraction to addition -Take opposite of 2nd number - THEN USE ADDITION RULES!!! Same Sign: Different Sign: -Add numbers together -Just look at the numbers (ignore sign) -Make answer have the same -Subtract sign as the numbers in problem -Make answer have the same sign as what you have more of in the problem ( + or -)

4 Station Shape Cards Each person will get a card with 5 problems.
You will complete the 5 problems. Once the timer goes off, you will meet with your group to check your answers

5 Example -18 + (-27)= 17 – 40 = 45 + (-32) = -87 – (-24) =
a is positive and b is negative: b – a could give a negative solution…TRUE or FALSE? Or 5) The difference between two numbers is -4. Which expressions could represent the subtraction problem? 5 – (-1) c. 1 – 5 -5 – d. -1 – (-5)

6 Answers -1 – (-10)

7 Adding/ Subtracting Integers Worksheet due Wednesday!!
Bellwork: Tuesday Agenda: Adding/ Subtracting Integers Worksheet due Wednesday!!

8 3 Term Addition and Subtraction Notes
7.NS.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers 7.NS.1a Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

9 Understanding Rules x= a positive number y= a negative number
Could this be true? x + y = negative sum y + x = positive sum x - y = negative sum y - x = positive sum

10 3 Terms If ALL ADDITION: -3 + 8 + (-4)= 6 + (-12) + (-9)= 5 + (-4) = 1
Use RULES working with 2 numbers at a time Example: (-4)= (-12) + (-9)= 5 + (-4) = 1

11 3 Terms If ALL SUBTRACTION: -3 - 8 - (-4)= 6 - (-12) - (-9)=
Change problem to ALL ADDITION Keep the 1st number the same, add the opposite for the next two terms Then, use ADDITION RULES working with 2 numbers at a time Example: (-4)= (-12) - (-9)= -3 + (-8) + 4= ____ +_____ + _____= -3 + (-8) + 4= = -7

12 3 Terms If MIXED: -3 - 8 + (-4)= 6 + (-12) - (-9)=
Change all subtraction to ADDITION KEEP ADDITION THE SAME Then, use ADDITION RULES working with 2 numbers at a time Example: (-4)= (-12) - (-9)= -3 + (-8) + (-4)= ____ +_____ + _____= -3 + (-8) + (-4)= -11 + (-4) = -15

13 PRACTICE!! -2 + (-14) + 9= 18 – (-3) – 4= -13 – (-6) + 11=

15 Turn in Homework to the bin or sign the board!!!!!!
Bellwork: Wednesday Turn in Homework to the bin or sign the board!!!!!!

16 Word Problem Notes 7.NS.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers 7.NS.1a Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

17 Word Problem Tips Use number lines/ draw pictures to help make sense of problems Vertical number lines help with sea level, elevation, and temperature. Underline what the question is asking: Example: The temperature was 2 degrees. Later in the day, it was -9 degrees. How much did the temperature change? The temperature was 2 degrees. Later in the day, it was -9 degrees. What was the difference in temperature during that day?

18 Tips Change= direction Moving up is positive Moving down is negative
Difference = distance How far apart? This is always a positive number

19 Example 1

20 Example 2

21 Example 3 A shark is swimming 5 feet below sea level. To catch food, the shark swims to a depth of -25 feet. What integer represents this change in depth?

22 Sea Level Example

24 Adding/ Subtracting Integers Quiz tomorrow
Bellwork: Thursday Agenda: STUDY!!! Adding/ Subtracting Integers Quiz tomorrow

25 7.NS.1 Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers 7.NS.1a Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

26 Adding and Subtracting INTEGERS

27 BOOM *You will work in groups of 4 *Each group will work out the problem on dry erase board *If correct, you call pull a stick Sticks -Boom (add 20 points!) -Swap (swap scores with any team) -Double (double your points) -Points between 1-10

28 Question 1 The difference between two numbers is -5. Which of the expressions could represent the subtraction problem? Choose all that apply! -6 – (-1) 3 – 8 -4 – 3 -4 – (-2) A & B

29 Question 2 B & C 3 Game Score 1 2 -1 3 -3
In golf, scores that are under the expected score are represented by negative numbers. Jim played three games of golf during a tournament. He scores for each game are in the table. Which statement is true about Jim’s score during the tournament? Jim’s score changed between game 1 and game 2 by 1. Jim’s score changed from game 2 and game 3 by -2. Jim’s score changed from game 1 to game 3 by -4. What was the total score for all three games?? Game Score 1 2 -1 3 -3 B & C 3

30 Question 3 Let a represent a positive number and b represent a negative number. Tell whether the statement is true or false. The sum of ( a + b) could be positive. The difference ( a – b) could be negative. The sum (b + a) must be negative. TRUE FALSE

31 Question 4 Write if the answer to the expression is a positive sum, negative sum or zero. 8 + (-2)+(-3) (-3) 2 + (-5)+ (-3) Positive Zero Negative

32 Question 5 -4 - (-3) - 2 Write as an addition problem
-4 - (-3) - 2 Write as an addition problem What is the value of this expression? (-2) -3

33 Question 6 Demonstrate how to add -3 + (-5) on a horizontal number line.

34 Question 7 Demonstrate how to add -6 + 8 on a vertical number line. 3
2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4 -5 -6

35 Question 8 -6 -5 -3 -12 21 -22 -2 + (-4) = 4. -7 – (-2) =
-2 + (-4) = – (-2) = 3 + (-6) = – 9 = = Opposite of 22 =

36 Question 9 Campbell dropped a fishing line 12 feet below the surface of the water. He decided to move the line up 5 feet closer to the surface of the water. What integer best describes the position of the fishing hook? -7 feet

37 Question 10 At 7 p.m. it was -15 degrees outside. By 11 p.m. it was -23 degrees. What was the change in temperature from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.? -8

38 QUIZ: Friday Have out pencil Turn in QUIZ when finished to BINS
