Step 1: Learning Ten Places
Partner up with the person sitting right next to you (left).. If for some reason you do not have a partner, look around the class, if we have an odd number we can have one group of three. Your objective is to learn about 10 different places on Earth Essential Question to answer: What skills do geographers use?

Directions Each team will choose 10 places on Earth to research and to study. Students may choose places that are well-known or unfamiliar. However, all places should be on land and located at least within 250 miles of each other. Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, South America Students will make a list of 8-10 interesting facts about each place and also put the latitude and longitude of each place they choose to study. Take a blank World Map at the front of the class on my desk. You will plot your specific places on this map.

Included with your facts, you need to answer these questions based upon the country your place is located in; What is the… You will use the “World Fact Book” website Land Area (sq.miles) Population 2015 (Millions) Population Density (World Rank) Birth Rate Death Rate Infant Mortality per 1,000 (births) Child Mortality per 1,000 (births Life Expectancy Males/Females Per Capita GNP ($US)

Putting it Together What skills did you use to learn about your 10 places? Students will organize their notes and select 3 facts about each place. These facts will be used as clues in the treasure hunt.

Step 2: Creating a Treasure Atlas
Students create a Treasure Atlas with clues to help other students locate a buried treasure somewhere on Earth.

Directions: Students will “bury” their treasure in one of the places they studied in Step 1. Have them note the latitude and longitude of the place. Then students will use the facts they learned about the place to create clues for a Treasure Atlas. Clues will be about locations that, when followed, will lead to the buried treasure.

Directions: Cont.… The correct response to each clue will be a place name and coordinates that can be easily looked up. For example the clue “ tallest waterfall in Zimbabwe,” would be answered “Victoria Falls, 18 degrees S, 25 degrees E.” Students will write each clue on an Google Doc and list all the clues with their answers on a separate Doc Each correct answer will earn a new clue to the next location, eventually leading to the buried treasure. Make sure your clues follow a logical route.

Step 3: Playing the Game Students participate in a Global Treasure Hunt Tournament.

Directions: Students will set up games at designated areas of the rooms. Each team will play in all of the other teams games. Note the time and give each team one clue chosen at random. Teams can use atlases, research books, and internet resources to help them find each location based on the clues. Each correct answer earns a new clue. Finding all clues (locations) in a game leads to its “treasure.” Have teams track the time it takes to play each game. The team that locates all or most of the treasures in the least amount of time wins the tournament.

Essential Questions What skills did you need to play the game?
