1 Graphing Biology Fall 2016

2 Question: How are line, bar and circle graphs similar? How are they different? Construct a Venn diagram representing these.

3 Graphing Graph- a visual display of information or data.
5 Parts of a graph: Axis labels Units Intervals Data Title

4 5 Parts of a Graph Axis labels
x-axis is the horizontal line (or the bottom line) horizontal line is drawn along the horizon The independent variable goes here- this is the one over which you have CONTROL Write a descriptive label under the line y-axis is the vertical line (or the side line) just draw a y and drag the tail downward in a straight line The dependent variable goes here- this is the one that you are MEASURING Write a descriptive label vertically from the bottom up

5 5 Parts of a Graph Units Intervals Title
Write the units in parenthesis after the axis label This is often an abbreviation Intervals Choose intervals that make it easy to read and so the data occupies the majority of the graph. Title Choose a title for the graph that uniquely identifies it. The title should not just repeat the labels, but add information specific to what the data represents.

6 5 Parts of a Graph Data Plot the data points on the graph.
Decide whether the origin (0,0) is a valid data point. Coordinates are written (x,y). Connect all of the points on the graph with a line. This is a nice way to illustrate the basic relationship between the two variables.

7 Types of Graphs Line Graph- Identify:
Shows trends or how the data changes over time. Identify: Axis labels Units Intervals Title Data

8 Types of Graphs Bar Graph Identify:
Useful for comparing information collected by counting. Identify: Axis labels Units Intervals Title Data Example graph/chart.

9 Types of Graphs Circle Graph
(aka Pie Chart) Used to show how a fixed quantity is broken down into parts. Identify Labels Unit Title Data Example graph/chart.

10 Question: How are line, bar and circle graphs similar
Question: How are line, bar and circle graphs similar? How are they different? Construct a diagram detailing these graphs. All three graphs are used to display data. Titles, labels, data, units A line graph shows relationships between 2 variables. A bar graph can be used to compare information. A circle graph shows percentages (%).
