1 HYBRID RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS AND ENERGY SAVING
Presentation by: Sunpreet kaur (Lecturer,EE Deptt.)

2 OVERVIEW Why is there a demand for alternative energy?
Why should we prefer renewable energy? What is a hybrid energy system? Why is a hybrid energy system a viable alternative to traditional energy sources?

3 Why alternative energy?
The demand for alternative energy sources is increasing each year due to need for clean and renewable sources of energy. At current rates, the world uses fossil fuels 1,00,000 times faster than they can form. For locating oil rigs we have to burrow deeper and deeper into the earth to reach coal seams or scraping off layers of precious topsoil . Fossil fuels take a toll on the atmosphere, as the combustion processes release many pollutants, including sulfur dioxide-a major component in acid rain.

4 CONT…….. In Biomass-based hybrid energy supply system some limitations in terms of market development, mainly because of high initial cost and fluctuating power generation is strongly affected by climatic conditions Seasonal variance In order to resolve these problems, biomass energy can be combined with other renewables to form a hybrid energy system.

5 INTRODUCTION Hybrid energy systems are growing in popularity due to the reliability of stand alone solar or wind power sources. Hybrid renewable energy source is composed of two or more energy sources. Hybrid energy systems are used in remote areas for power generation. The use of hybrid power generations came forward due to the high prices of oil. This one expense can be of many uses to people living in remote areas.

6 OVERVIEW Let us consider a load of 100% power supply and there is no renewable system to fulfil this need, so two or more renewable energy system can be combined. For example, 60% from a biomass system, 20% from a wind energy system and the remainder from fuel cells . Thus combining all these renewable energy systems may provide 100% of the power and energy requirements for the load, such as a home or business.

7 HYBRID SYSTEM A Hybrid system consists of: Photovoltaic Array
Wind turbines Hydrogen subsystems Controller Battery Bank Inverter DC Load/AC Load

9 HYRESS PROJECT Many of the projects named as HYRESS projects are going on in the world to develop the hybrid systems. The strategic objective of the HYRESS project is to remove the knowledge barriers against the installation of Renewable Energy Systems. Creation of micro and mini-grids based on renewables. Hybrid systems is build up to match the varying supply with very different consumption profiles

10 Cont…… The hybrid systems will be consisted of photovoltaics, small wind generators, hydrogen subsystems and biodiesel generator and they will be installed in selected areas of the MPC(Mediterranean Partner Countries) to set-up and provide electricity.

11 DESIGN OF HYBRID SYSTEM

12 Focus of a new Hybrid Systems Initiative
Photovoltaics Bio Power Wind Concentrating Solar Power Fuel Cells A hybrids program can create market opportunities for emerging technologies before they are mature. Power Quality Village Power Power Parks

13 PROJECT INSTALLED IN EGYPT
The system design was performed to cover part of the electricity and water needs of the local community Also provides fresh water through a brackish water

14 DESCRIPTION The proposed Hybrid system will consist of PV modules connected in series to achieve the appropriate inlet voltage Each group of PV modules that are connected in series is connected to the micro grid via a string inverter. The wind turbine produces three phase AC power. The rectifier that converts the three phase AC power to DC and then the wind turbine inverter converts the DC power to the appropriate one or three phase power of the micro grid.

15 BENEFITS These can be used to generate electricity which can power many applications like TV, water pumps, grinders, irons and other machinery. Can also be used for supplying electricity to schools and churches which are located in remote areas. These power systems can supply direct current and alternate current accordingly. The reduced range of power supply and the variation in the energy capabilities should be monitored using charge controller.

16 FUTURE ASPECTS It the most promising applications of renewable energy technologies in remote areas, where the cost of grid extension is prohibitive and the price of fossil fuels increase drastically with the remoteness of the location. More reliable supply of electricity. Also the problem of energy storage could be addressed by the use of a hydrogen subsystem, which is an alternative to diesel generators as a backup.

17 APPLICATION Village Power Commercial Power Parks
Industrial Power Quality Off-Grid Power Green Power Power Supplies for Remote Households Electricity for Lighting or Water Pumping and Water Supply

18 CONCLUSION Hybrid power systems can offer solutions and value to customers that individual technologies cannot match. Some renewable hybrid power systems are commercially available today. Hybrid energy sources can be used to generate electricity which can power many applications These power systems can supply direct current and alternate current accordingly.
