Fig. 1 (a) Scars, bruises and abrasions with different shapes and colors on the face. (b) Both old and new scars, bruises and abrasions are present on the chest and abdomen. (c) Right inguinal region: tumefaction with exfoliation of the skin. Penis tip: hypertrophic skin. (d) Pelvic abscesses (white arrow). Partially descended right testis in a dilated inguinal channel (green arrowhead). Hypertrophic foreskin (post-circumcision keloid reaction? see text – yellow arrowhead). (e) A post-mortem CT scan showing multiple parenchymal consolidations in the lungs. (f) A post-mortem CT scan showing hypodense formation in the right and left inguinal regions and extending to the proximal third of the thigh. Fig. 2 (A–C) Lung. A necrotic area with few inflammatory cells is seen at the right in (A). Surrounding pulmonary parenchyma shows alveolar oedema. A compact blood clot is observed in an artery (left). In the necrotic tissue small basophilic corpuscles suggesting the presence of bacteria are seen (B). Microbiological cultures documented the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (see text). A hyaline membrane is shown in (C). These findings indicate ARDS and pulmonary intravascular coagulation (haematoxylin and eosin stain, H&E, 100× in A and C; 600× in B). (D and E) Thymus. A bulky yellow–brownish lipomatous mass was found in the anterior mediastinum, almost completely replacing the gland (thymic atrophy). The mass was composed of multivacuolated fat cells (brown fat; (D), right). Rarely, Hassall corpuscles were found (E) (H&E, 100× in D, 400× in E).
