Elements of French Romanticism
between roughly 1800 and 1850 influenced by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars emphasized emotions and scenes of awe and terror emphasized the importance of the artist’s imagination and artistic inspiration in France, history painting with a political message many paintings reflected current events rather than mythological or religious figures

Summative assessment Using the various sources provided in class, “tell” the story of the storming of the Bastille based on your perspective of this important historical and political event. Choose a specific part of the event and describe the painting you would create in the Romantic style to capture this particular moment. Be sure to include who and what are pictured in the foreground and the background and their significance to the overall tone of the painting. Also detail how you would portray Romanticism’s main stylistic elements into your painting. Lastly, include a rough sketch of the painting with the specific elements highlighted and labeled.
