Freshwater: Water Underground
Groundwater Freshwater: Water Underground
2
Groundwater comes from precipitation Precipitation can evaporate
run off the surface soak into the ground
3
percolate Water that trickles down between soil and through cracks and spaces in layers of rock The size of the space (pore) determines how easily the water moves through the rock/soil
4
permeable Material that allows groundwater to move through easily such as sand and gravel
5
impermeable Water travels until it reaches a surface with few or no pores for it to penetrate like clay or granite meaning water cannot pass through easily
6
Water Zones Unsaturated Zone: Layer of rocks and soil above the water table Water table: top of the saturated zone, where there is water
7
Water Zones Saturated Zone: area of permeable material or soil that is totally filled or saturated with water below the water table and above the impermeable solid rock
8
Bringing up Groundwater
Aquifers: Underground layer of rock or sediment that holds water
9
Bringing up Groundwater
Wells: A channel dug beneath the water table to reach the aquifers sometimes using pumps
10
Bringing up Groundwater
Artesian well: water rises because of pressure from the aquifer without pumps
11
Springs/Geysers: brings up water to the surface through natural process
Springs are usually normal temp Geysers form when hot water has been circulating and begins to rise through narrow openings from the pressure of gases and bubbling steam
