1 The Parts of a Flower Most flowers have four parts: sepals, petals,
stamens, pistils.

2 Parts of a Flower Sepals protect the bud until it opens.
Petals attract insects. Stamens make pollen. Pistils make seeds and grow the fruit to protect them.

3 Stamen (male) Anther: pollen grains grow in the anther.
Pollen contains the male reproductive cells (sperm). The filament is what thin stem-like structure that holds the anther up.

4 The stamen (male part) anther filament pollen

5 Pistil (female) Stigma Style Carpel (ovary) Ovules (eggs)

6 Pistil (female) Stigma – sticky part of the carpel that traps pollen grains Style – a tube that allows sperm to travel down to fertilize the eggs (ovules) Carpel (ovary) – ovules (eggs) are here waiting to be fertilized and turn into seeds; ovary will grow into a fruit around them to protect them.

7 The carpel (female part) stigma style ovary

8 Pollination Flowering plants use the wind, insects, bats, birds and mammals to transfer pollen from the male (stamen) part of the flower to the female (stigma) part of the flower.

9 Pollination A flower is pollinated when a pollen grain lands on its stigma. Each carpel grows into a fruit which contains the seeds.

10 Fertilization Pollen grains germinate on the stigma, growing down the style to reach an ovule. Fertilized ovules develop into seeds. The carpel enlarges to form the flesh of the fruit and to protect the ovary.

11 Seed dispersal Seeds are dispersed in many different ways: Wind
Explosion Water Animals Birds Scatter

12 How birds and animals help seed dispersal
Some seeds are hidden in the ground as a winter store. Some fruits have hooks on them and cling to fur or clothes. Some animals eat fruit and excrete seeds in their scat.
