4 Overview - Introduction - Importance of Dust & Chips Management
- Physics - Dust Management – A Systemic Approach - Bringing it All Together - Q&A

5 Importance Wood dust (.5 – 2.5 microns) & Chips are a health & safety hazard Workplace Exposure Limits: .1 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) .5 mg/m3 (8-hour time-weighted average, total inhalable dust)

6

7 Importance (cont’d) Lungs: Nose: Eyes: Skin:
Asthma; Lung function impairment & Extrinsic allergic alveolitis (disease with flu-like symptoms) Nose: Rhinitis (runny nose), Violent sneezing, Blocked nose, Nose bleeds, Nasal cancer (very rarely) Eyes: Soreness, Watering, Conjunctivitis (pink eye) Skin: Allergic reactions, Irritation, Sensitisation dermititis

8 Importance (cont’d) Workplace Hazards and Concerns:
Unsafe footing: dusty floors Increased fire & explosion risk Machines: Overheat: poor air circulation Perform less efficiently: chip clogging Insurance Policy Considerations

10 Physics – Moving Dust & Chips
Air Velocity Required = 4,000 FPM ( ~ 45 MPH ) Air Volume (CFM) Required = 1,000 CFM

12 Physics – Moving Dust & Chips
Static Pressure (SP) Affected by: > Filter > Ducting**, including: Elbows Wyes Gates Flex Hoses > Machine’s dust hood & connection ** SP Greater in Smaller Ducting!

15 Dust Management – Systematic Approach
Three Commandments of Dust Management Collect Dust and Chips at Source Limit Resistance (Static Pressure (SP)) Establish & Maintain Air Velocity Regarding point #3, this includes pre-filtering with a cyclone and proper maintenance of your system. See Tommy Mac from Rough Cuts video: There is also the option to introduce a Thein Baffle ( in lieu of a cyclone. It’s not as effective, but is undoubtedly better than having no pre-separation capability.
