2. Martin Luther King JR.
I used nonviolent tactics based on the teachings of Mahatma Ghandi to push for civil rights and equality.
I organized many marches and protests during the civil rights era, whose locations included Selma, Birmingham, and Washington D.C.
I also gave the famous “I Have a Dream” speech in the name of equality.

3. Rosa Parks
I was a national feminine icon of resistance to racial segregation.
I worked closely with Marin Luther King Jr. and Edgar Nixon (president of the local chapter of the NAACP).
I became famous for taking a stand against public segregation by refusing to give up my seat on the bus to a white man.

4. Frederick Douglass “Sage of Anacostia”
I was a slave turned prolific American author whose literature is still studied in schools and colleges to this day.
My most influential works include The Narrative of the Life of ______, an American slave and My Bondage and My Freedom.

5. Barrack Obama
After graduating from Colombia University, I became enrolled in Harvard University where I served as the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review.
I was named a Nobel Piece Prize laureate in 2009.
On January 20, 2009, I was inaugurated as the first African American president of the United States of America.

6. Harriet Tubman “Moses”
I was a female abolitionist, scout, and spy for the United States Army during the Civil War.
I am most famous for my work through the Underground Railroad.

7. Aretha Franklin “Queen of Soul”
I was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
I began my career singing gospel for the church my father ministered, and would eventually become famous for my rendition of Otis Redding’s Respect.

8. Langston Hughes
I was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri.
I was an early innovator of a new style of art known as jazz poetry.
I am most famous as being a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as for my poems such as The Negro Speaks of Rivers and Let America be America Again.
