1 Geography of Africa

2 Africa’s Beginings People have lived in Africa for a very long time.
Scientists believe that the first humans appeared in Eastern and Southern Africa between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago. Early human groups in Africa lived as hunters and gatherers. They then began to settle in villiages The first African civilizations were Egypt and Kush

3 GEOGRAPHY The geography of Africa caused many challenges and opportunities. Africa is very large in size, it is the 2nd largest continent after Asia. The enormous continent is divided up into four geographic zones: Desert, Mediterranean, Rain Forest, and Savanna. Most of Africa lies in the tropics

4 Climate Zones Rainforests:
*Rainforests stretch along the Equator, and make up 10% of the African land area. *Gets heavy rainfall and is warm there year long. *Farming can be difficult Savannas: *Cover up 40% of Africa’s land area *Have high temperatures and uneven rains *Enough rain for farming * In Northern Africa the savannas connect with the Sahel- plants that grow barely enough food for people and animals

5 Climate Zones Deserts:
*Africa’s third zone. Found north and south of the grasslands *About 40 % of Africa is desert The worlds largest desert is the Sahara- stretches across much of North Africa Kalahari desert lies in southwestern Africa Mediterranean: The fourth zone Found along the northern coast and southern tip of Africa. Adequate rainfall, warm temperatures, and fertile soil produce many crops

6 Landforms and Rivers Most of Africa is covered by a series of plateaus
Some of the earliest human fossils are found in the Great Rift Valley North Africa has the Nile River West Africa has the Niger River

7 Each team will be given an “opportunity” that the geography of Africa gives the people that live there. Your group needs to come to a consensus. This means that you all have to give and take and agree on your answers As a group you will discuss Three Problems that could occur due to the “opportunity” you were given and come up with solutions to each of them. YOU MUST COME TO A TEAM CONSENCUS! EACH PERSON IS WRITING DOWN THIS INFORMATION AND WILL TURN IT IN! You will then discuss Three positives and explain why they are positives. Consensus Time
