European Partitioning
How did European partitioning across Africa contribute to conflict, civil war, and artificial political boundaries?

What is imperialism?

Europeans first took an interest in the African continent when they were engaged in the slave trade

European countries eventually set up colonies in Africa because they needed the raw material found on the African continent

Imperialism is a system of acquiring colonies to provide raw materials for a stronger country

Part of early European plans for Africa included protecting trade and transportation routes

African groups begin to challenge European colonial rule after World War II.

The boundaries of the new African states created after World War II cause problems because the boundaries split tribes and kinship groups

Europeans followed the old colonial boundaries to draw new boundaries for African countries

Now that we’ve finished…
Create a simile to complete one of the following statements: Artificial political boundaries in Africa were like_________ because ______. European colonization in Africa was like _______ because ______. After composing your simile, create a detailed illustration with color to accompany the simile.
