Errors in the analytical phase are approximately %. These also include non-interference causes, e.g. due to equipment malfunction and undetected failure in quality. Errors caused by assay interference are only a proportion of this, so less than 0.078%. Biotin interference is only a proportion of these assay interference errors, so much less then 0.078%. 13 Physicians should not assume patients are aware of the importance of reporting about their use of supplements and vitamins to physicians or laboratory personnel before a blood test. In a survey commissioned by Roche Diagnostics among consumers, findings revealed patients expect physicians to provide them with complete instructions on how to prepare for a blood test, including what they need to report. Additionally, many consumers are unaware of the role medicines and supplements could play in the test result.

15 Normal intake of biotin as part of a daily multivitamin poses no risk of interference. High doses of biotin (>5 mg per day) have the potential to lead to test interference. In order to reach this amount a patient would need to take 100 capsules of a typical multivitamin (100 x mcg) in a day. Some over-the-counter supplements marketed for hair, skin and nail benefits may contain up to 20 mg of biotin and physicians may recommend up to 300 mg per day for conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
