Aug. 19 Russia smashes into Germany, and wins early battles.

3. Short Lived Success Masurian Lakes cut off 2 Russian armies
August 25th fighting began near the town of Tannenberg.
5 days of terrible slaughter.
125,000 Russians dead and 13,000 Germans.

4. Germans not finished yet
Now, after victory the Germans rush north and join up with reinforcements from France to kill another 100,000 Russians at the battle of Masurian Lakes.
¼ of a million Russian dead in 1 month.

5. Victory for Russian
Austria followed Plan R and conquered massive land in Russia.
But within a week run into 5 Russian armies that stopped them in their tracks.
The Austrian retreated 200km, leaving weapons behind.

6. Austria losing to Serbs?
Austria was also losing to Serbia in the South.
Russia was now in a good position to attack Germany from the south.
