10 HOW KNOWLEDGE OF TECHNIQUE AFFECTED MY PERFORMANCE
AFTER CAREFUL PRE-TEST ANALYSIS IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT MY PERFORMANCE WAS BEING HINDERED BY THE KNOWLEDGE I HAD ABOUT SHOT TECHNIQUE AND EXECUTION. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS WAS MY ABILITY TO PERFORM AN EFFECTIVE DIG SHOT. WHEN THE BALL WAS PLAYED IN MY DIRECTION MY ATTEMPT AT PLAYING A DIG WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AS THE BALL DID NOT GO TO ITS DESIRED TARGET. MORE OFTEN THAN NOT IT WOULD FLY OFF AT DIFFERENT ANGLES AND END UP BEING AN UNPLAYABLE SHOT. AS A DIRECT RESULT GAME PLAY WOULD BREAK DOWN AND I WOULD LOSE MY TEAM A POINT. I HAD NO IDEA WHY THIS REBOUND WAS HAPPENING BUT HAD A FEELING IT MUST BE A RESULT OF MY HAND AND ARM POSITIONING. 11 ANOTHER FACTOR THAT HINDERED MY PERFORMANCE WAS MY
INABILITY TO COMPLETE A SUCCESSFUL SERVE. ALL TO OFTEN WHEN I HIT THE BALL IT DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO CLEAR THE NET. EVEN WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO HIT IT AS HARD AS POSSIBLE THE SERVE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. AS A RESULT EVERY TIME IT WAS MY TURN TO SERVE I WOULD LOSE MY TEAM A POINT WITHOUT FORCING THE OPPOSITION TO PLAY A SHOT. THESE TWO FACTORS ALONE MADE ME REALISE THAT, DUE TO MY LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF CORRECT TECHNIQUE, MY OVERALL PERFORMANCE WAS BEING HINDERED. 12 WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE MY PERFORMANCE IN RELATION TO THIS FACTOR
BY PARTICIPATING IN THE COURSES 8 WEEK SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME AND LISTENING TO CLEAR AND PRECISE FEEDBACK ON HOW TO IMPROVE MY SKILL EXECUTION I AIM TO IMPROVE. MY TEACHER INDICATED VARIOUS POINTS ON MY DIGGING TECHNIQUE THAT WOULD IMPROVE MY ACCURACY AND CONSISTENCY. BY ROUNDING MY SHOULDERS AND PUSHING MY ARMS TOGETHER AND SKYWARD I LEARNED TO CREATE A FLAT PLATFORM THAT WOULD ENABLE THE BALL TO BOUNCE OF THEM IN A CONTROLLED MANNER. IN ADDITION TO THIS I WAS SHOWN TO USE KNEE FLEXION AND EXTENSION SO THE POWER WAS GENERATED FROM THAT AREA AND NOT BY SWINGING MY ARMS AT THE BALL. IN ADDITION TO THIS I WAS SHOWN VARIOUS WAYS TO IMPROVE THE POWER IN MY SERVING TECHNIQUE. BY TAKING A STEP INTO MY SERVE AND EFFECTIVELY TRANSFERING MY WEIGHT MORE POWER COULD BE GENERATED. ANOTHER POINT WAS OPENING MY SHOULDERS ON THE TOSS UP CREATING A SIDE-ON STANCE AND NOT JUST RELYING ON A FRONT ON STANCE TO GENERATE ANY POWER.
