PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SECTION Effective feedback and report writing

Effective feedback has the following features (applies to Formative and Summative tasks – the learning cycle): 1. Describes observations precisely In MYP – this means identifying how student work matches the descriptors in the rubrics (refer to From Principles into Practice pages 53-54) 2. Expresses expectations (assuming these were originally discussed at the time the summative task was set.) In MYP, this could involve directing students or the class (if the problem is general) to the command terms at higher levels of the rubric, or by exemplying what a HOT (High Order Thinking) response looks like.

Using feedback to change learning
3. Invite student(s) to respond and reflect (In MYP – as examples - this this could involve (i) students checking your judgement against their work – (ii) it could be a class discussion – consider using the Harvard Claim/Support/ Question Model1 for driving this) 4. Students need to take responsibility for change If you are sure that you have been explicit and precise in the assessment expectations, then if students have not responded appropriately (particularly if this was just a few students) this places the onus on them 5. Support better performance choices (In MYP this would be the next opportunity to respond to a task involving similar skills.) Remember: skills are the transferable knowledge that prepare students for further learning.

1Harvard Claim/Support/Question reasoning routine Task: Use the Harvard Claim/ Support/ Question routine to improve our formal reporting (and therefore feedback) at Wangsa Maju To introduce you to this thinking tool for reasoning and discussion. I am going to provide a document (which was used in a completely different school) and I want everyone to make a claim-support you claim- set a question to make this material more relevant to our campus
