1 Cellular Organelles Essential Standard Summarize the structure and function of organelles in eukaryotic cells (including the nucleus, plasma membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, vacuoles, chloroplasts and ribosomes) and ways that these organelles interact with each other to perform the function of the cell. Essential Standard Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in terms of their general structures (plasma membrane and genetic material) and degree of complexity

2 Cells are the smallest living units. They are organized & specialized.
Stomach Cells Stomach Tissue Stomach Digestive System (Cells)  (Tissue)  (Organ)  (Organ System)

3 The Cell Theory All living things are made of cells.
Cells are the smallest living things. All cells come from other cells

4 Prokaryote or Eukaryote?
Prokaryotes: Simple, one-celled organisms with no organelles (Bacteria). Eukaryotes: Complex cells that have many organelles. (Most cells today!)

5 Animal Cell VS. Plant Cell
Round in Shape Rectangular in Shape No Cell Wall Has Cell Wall Has Small Vacuole(s) Has Large Vacuole Has Green Chloroplasts

6 Organelles & Functions
Nucleus: Controls the cells activities and holds DNA. (Mayor) Plasma Membrane: Flexible boundary that controls what enters and leaves a cell. (Bouncer)

7 Cell Wall: Strong wall found only in plant cells that gives extra support and protection.
(Police Officer) Mitochondria: Provide power/energy to the cell and is the site of cellular respiration. (Power Plant)

8 Ribosomes: Site of protein synthesis.
Chloroplasts: Site of photosynthesis; found only in plants. Gives them their green color. (Factory) (Hulk)

9 Vacuoles: Used for storage; much larger in plant cells (the closet)
Cytoplasm: The clear fluid of the cell between the nucleus and cell membrane. (Swimming Pool)

10 Centrioles Two rod shaped bodies near the nucleus.
Aid in cell division by directing the formation of the mitotic spindle. Found only in animal cells It is like a teacher in the hallway making sure students change classes properly.
