1
Compare and contrast the 3 main differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells we have learned so far in class (see your note sheet for today!) Recall and name as many parts of each cell that we’ve learned about so far Give examples of each type of cell Daily Science
2
Comparing Cells Biology
3
Cell Similarities All cells have a few basic features in common:
They are all surrounded by a plasma membrane In the membrane is a jellylike fluid called the cytoplasm (holds organelles) All cells contain chromosomes (carry DNA) All cells have ribosomes (make proteins) Cell Similarities
4
Prokaryotic- Major Organelles
DNA- in a nucleoid region No nucleus No membrane-bounded structures (organelles) Cell wall Prokaryotic- Major Organelles
5
Picture of Prokaryotic
6
Eukaryotic- Major Organelles
DNA- in the nucleus Many membrane-bound organelles Eukaryotic- Major Organelles
7
Eukaryotic-Animal Cells
Have all eukaryotic properties plus… Cytoskeleton and plasma membrane (cell support) Some have flagellum (tails) Centrioles or centrosome Mitochondria Round in cell shape Eukaryotic-Animal Cells
8
Eukaryotic-Plant Cells
Have all eukaryotic properties plus… Cytoskeleton, plasma membrane, and cell wall No flagellum Central vacuole (for water) Chloroplast Mitochondria Square in cell shape Eukaryotic-Plant Cells
9
Make a key on the back of your worksheet for comparing plant and animal cells ONLY
Use one color to circle or highlight similar organelles Use another color to circle or highlight different organelles unique to that cell only Color Code Organelles
