Biology Module #5 Atoms, Molecules, and Elements Jordyn, Michael, and Katelynn

2 Atoms- The basic building blocks of matter.
Just as cells are the basic building blocks of life, atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. Everything from the tiniest speck of dust to the biggest mountain in the world is made up of atoms. An atom name is determined by its number of protons, electrons and neutrons. When a number appears after an atom's name, it tells you the sum of the protons and neutrons in the atom's nucleus.

3 MOLECULES Chemicals that result from atoms linking together. Elements are combined to make molecules. The important thing to understand about molecules is that the properties of a molecule are determined by the type and number of atoms that link together, as well as the way that they link together. Not only the type but also the number of atoms that link together determine the properties of a molecule. Two molecules can be made up of the same exact atoms, but if the number of even one type of atom is different between the two, the two molecules will have completely different properties. EXAMPLE: CO vs CO2 (carbon monoxide) (carbon dioxide) C===O O===C===O DEADLY not going to kill you.

4 Elements- a collection of atoms that all have the same number of protons. Since the number of electrons (and therefore the number of protons) is the most important factor in determining an atom’s properties, we tend to separate atoms by their number of protons. Elements are the building blocks of matter. Elements are what make up the periodic table.

5 Atoms?= 3 atoms (2 Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen)
H2O Atoms?= 3 atoms (2 Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen) Elements?= 2 elements (Hydrogen and Oxygen) Molecules?= 1 molecule 3CH3 Atoms?= 4 atoms x 3 molecules = 12 atoms Elements?= 2 elements (Carbon and Hydrogen) Molecules?=3 molecules

6 QUIZ! ! ATOM ELEMENT MOLECULE H2CO3 nitrogen-14 P
