Outline for Today Focus on Osmosis Puget Sound Water System
Extremophiles!
4
Mint plant cutting in normal water
5
Mint plants after 2 hours in salt water
6
Mint plants transferred back into freshwater (4 hours later)
7
When you think osmosis, think:
Water Follows Salt!
8
Osmosis Salt concentration of solution lower than inside the cell
Water enters the cell causing it to lyse (burst) Salt concentration of solution the same as inside the cell The amount of water in the cell stays the same Salt concentration of solution higher than inside the cell Water leaves the cell causing it to shrivel
9
These are red onion cells
These are red onion cells. The purple stuff is the cytoplasm inside the cell.
10
After adding salt, look what happens
After adding salt, look what happens. What is happening to the amount of purple cytoplasm inside the cell?
11
What do you think is causing that to happen?
After adding EVEN MORE salt, look what happens. What is happening to the amount of purple cytoplasm inside the cell? In osmosis: water follows salt! - Wherever there is more salt, water will go because it loves salt! What do you think is causing that to happen?

Is Puget Sound Salty? The salinity (salt content) of Puget Sound is 2.9% By comparison, drinking water (fresh water) has a salinity of less than 0.05% Estuaries, where freshwater streams meet a larger body of salt water (like the Puget Sound), contain brackish water. Brackish water is defined as water ranging from 0.5-3% salinity. Some organisms can live only in fresh water. Others live only in salt water. Some organisms can live in both. Examples?
15
Extreme Environments What makes an environment extreme?
Why can some organisms live in certain environments while others cannot?
